Best Selling Single of Bill Haley and His Comets

Bill Haley

It's not hard to see why "Rock Around The Clock" was the best-selling single of Bill Haley and His Comets. The catchy rock-and-roll-meets-blues song was written by Max Freedman and James Myers in 1952. However, Haley's version was recorded in 1954 for American Decca.

The song held the number one spot on the pop charts for two months and number three on the R&B chart with additional success in the UK. Rolling Stone magazine listed it as the number 159 spot on their list of top 500 greatest songs of all time.

Haley's recorded of the song was credited with being an anthem for rebellious young people in the 1950s, especially after it was featured in the 1995 movie Blackboard Jungle.

The full title of the song was "We're Gonna Rock Around The Clock Tonight," but was later shortened. Despite first being recorded by Italian-American band Sonny Dae and His Knights, Myers later stated that he originally wrote the song for Haley.
